AEC training pays off in ROI projects and employee retention

Employee retention is not a big issue for Appalachian Electric Co-op. John Turner has worked for AEC since 1999 and plans to remain “as long as they let me.” In her 16 years, Tracy Jett hasn’t seen much turnover, usually only after someone retires.

Amanda Raines has been at the company for less than two years and vows she’s only leaving in a casket.

AEC employees say they were honored that the co-op invested in them by paying for Dale Carnegie TN training.

All three were among 24 AEC employees who took Dale Carnegie TN training as a group. They got the full Dale Carnegie Course with added team projects that created and implemented money-saving ROI projects for the utility co-op.

AEC paid for the training and paid overtime for employees to take it. The experience made a great place to work even better. Amanda, a bookkeeping clerk, and John, AEC’s meter shop supervisor, say they felt honored to take part.

“To me it shows good faith in that the company thinks enough about me personally and the rest of us to send us through the program,” John says.

John won an actual award – he received the “Highest Award for Achievement” honor by vote of his classmates. His team improved the utility’s ability to reduce voltage during peak hours, a projected annual savings of more than $85,000. John thinks they can do even better.

“The cost savings were tremendous,” he says. “I think we have the potential to go just a little bit more.”

AEC provides electricity to more than 45,000 members, mostly residential, in parts of Jefferson, Sevier, Granger and Hamblin counties east of Knoxville. It has roughly 100 employees, and this was the third group that took Dale Carnegie training.

For their ROI project, Amanda and Tracy, the bookkeeping supervisor, and two other team members created a new system to allow emailing forms to and from assistance agencies and co-op customers. They had been printing and faxing forms. With the switch the department saw an immediate drop in expense for paper and printing cartridges.

More importantly, department members saw a big increase in the time they have for customer calls. The change allows more contact with customers on the phone, and customers get the help they need more quickly, Tracy says.

“I feel like we can spend more time with customers one-on-one when they call in,” Amanda says.

Customers feel valued, and so do the co-op employees. Being valued is the key to achievement. Employees who feel valued, confident, inspired, enthused and empowered are engaged employees. Engagement translates into higher productivity and employee retention.

We’ve got employee engagement white papers to show it.
